High quality pedals since 1972.

MXR

A growing pedal brand

MXR started making high quality pedals in 1972, but finding one in your local music store was fairly unlikely until the late 70’s. The tiny companies’ reputation grew mostly by word of mouth and artist use- but grow it did. By 1980 just about every guitarist either had or wanted one of the original four colorful MXR effects boxes. The Orange Phase 90, Yellow Distortion +, Red Dyna Comp, Blue Box (yea, I know), were all destined classics. MXR’s small, rugged enclosures and solid craftsmanship made for a pedal that could last generations. Unfortunately, MXR itself was coming apart from the inside. Ultimately MXR’s deeply divided partnership caused an untimely pause to MXR’S short, but explosive rise in 1984.

MXR users like Randy Rhodes, Eddie Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Keef and George Harrison helped keep demand for MXR’s devices growing, long after MXR shut its doors. Ironically, this is where the story truly begins, not ends. In 1987 the growing Jim Dunlop company acquired the rights to MXR. Dunlop’s efforts at resuscitating the small but influential company, is a case study in getting it right. MXR’s ‘core four’ FX pedals return to dealer shelves looking and sounding like they never left.
