In this case, it’s a good thing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the mid to late 60’s Mike Mathews worked for IBM, but was still booking bands, and playing keyboards in clubs around NYC. Every Electric Guitarist was chasing the same kind of sound, without much success. They’d say “I want smooth, long sustain, without all that fuzz. Like Santana, or BB King or Clapton ‘ya know?” Mathews understood it wasn’t a compressor that guitarists wanted. They wanted the sustain a Fuzz provided, without the raunchy tone that made playing chords sound like a forest fire. In 1968, \u003cstrong\u003eEHX \u003c\/strong\u003edelivered the big request in a small box. The \u003cstrong\u003eLPB-1 (Linear Power Booster) \u003c\/strong\u003eisn’t much more than a transistor, 9-volt battery potentiometer \u0026amp; on\/off switch, but it gets the job done. The little booster could kick a tube amps front end into a firestorm of grit, sustain and natural overdrive (without the muddy Fuzz box clipping). Electro Harmonix’s \u003cstrong\u003eLPB-1\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eis\u003c\/strong\u003e arguably the very first device that qualifies to be called an \u003cstrong\u003e‘Overdrive’\u003c\/strong\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"row-fluid\" style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"span6\"\u003e\n\u003ch3 class=\"anton\" text-center=\"\"\u003eFollowed by more classic pedals\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOther classics followed right along- \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe Muff Fuzz, Big Muff PI,\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eBad Stone, \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e(Phaser), \u003cstrong\u003eMemory Man\u003c\/strong\u003e (Echo\/Delay), \u003cstrong\u003eElectric Mistress\u003c\/strong\u003e (Flanger\/Filter Matrix), \u003cstrong\u003eClone Theory\u003c\/strong\u003e (Chorus), \u003cstrong\u003eDr. Q\u003c\/strong\u003e (Auto-Wah), Micro synth, and dozens more. In 1978, Mathews was awarded NYC’s small business award, but the fun didn’t last. In 1981, Union harassment led to frozen assets, forcing Matthews to close Electro Harmonix. The national labor board finally stepped in to halt the unlawful harassment a bit too late.The local garment union already silenced \u003cstrong\u003eEHX. \u003c\/strong\u003e(That’s right- the GARMENT UNION).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMathews got a new start in the former Soviet Union with his “New Sensor” company. He exported electronic components, and manufactured amps (like the infamous \u003cstrong\u003eMig 50\u003c\/strong\u003e), eventually leading to the purchase of Russia’s largest vacuum tube factory.
